LINDY HOP & SOLO JAZZ

Katie & Mike

Katie Cobalt (She/They) tried many different dance styles before falling in love with Swing. The freedom of improvisation, the satisfaction of rhythm and the deep historical and Black cultural roots of the dance made her want to learn more.

She is now known for her classroom energy, musicality, and infectious enthusiasm for all things Jazz. When it comes to dance, they deeply value self expression and fully committing to the idea. As a teacher, she focuses on individually helping her students on their own dance journeys and finds so much joy in seeing them grow.

Katie holds multiple first place titles at, International Lindy Hop Championships, Balkan Lindy Hop Championships and Savoy Cup. When not throwing down in international competitions they are teaching all over the world in more than 21 countries sharing what they have learned. When not on the dance floor you might find them in a hip hop class or on the stage at their local drag bar as Azure Thang.

Mike Sonder strives to create a learning environment that is fun, challenging, and inclusive. The goal is for each individual student to find their next step forward and enjoy that process of growth. Mike loves seeing students’ eyes light up when they understand a concept or feel a movement work naturally in their body for the first time.

Mike has taught dance in 21 countries and counting. He currently teaches Lindy Hop, Air Steps, Solo Jazz, and many different Blues styles.

Excellent SWING band from Belgium, brilliantly guided by Marie Anne Standaert (trumpet+vocals). Being a dancer herself, she perfectly knows how to combine all the musical ingredients to provide dancers with top swing music. All Hop-sh-Bam musicians swing with their whole body, heart and soul! Be prepared: Heavy swing and Hot jazz that will make your feet move like never before!

parties

On Friday and Saturday, we will have two incredible parties filled with the live music of The Hop ‘sh Bam Connection where dancers from here and abroad will be able to dance until dark.

On Sunday afternoon, we’ll conclude the festival with a delightful tea dance.

We will continue having a coffee corner in case you need a snack and there might be surprise events during the nightless nights!

Are you craving to show what you’ve got? Go solo or grab your friends and prepare a 50-70 second choreography and get ready to perform it at the Sunday party. The showcase can represent any style of Jazz (Lindy Hop, Balboa, Tap…) or Blues performed with a group, partner or solo. More info coming soon how to participate.

The main venue

Welcome to Hietsun Paviljonki, an amazing seaside venue on Helsinki’s Hietaranta beach that will be our main venue for the weekend.

The Great Hall of the venue will set the scene for swinging the night away with live music. Add to that the inviting lobby filled with coffee and goodies and the open terrace, both available for everyone to enjoy throughout the weekend, and we have got a place where magic happens — whether you’re dancing, relaxing, or simply soaking in the atmosphere!
